Speaker 1:Most individuals and healthcare providers all agree that genetic testing offers promise for more personalized healthcare and better outcomes. 3x4 Genetics did a survey and it was completed by 1,000 United States primary care physicians on the Medscape platform in October of 22, and a consumer health survey conducted by Global Insights from Material in October of 2022. They surveyed about 1,500 Americans that were 18 years or older. Is that 75% of individuals in the US said that they'd be more likely to follow their health provider's advice if they knew their genetic profile was used to personalize their care. 92% of the physicians surveyed said genetics is, yes, an important part of an individual's complete health picture, but only 17%, which is 2 out of 10 United States individuals, have ever even had a genetic test done, and of those two, the genetic test that was done was found to be clinically irrelevant. So starting patients with genes first provides the missing link to a personalized approach to increase healthspan and prevent, reverse, delay and manage pain or chronic disease. But in order to have personalized health care, we need to have genetics plus that health care right.
Speaker 1:When you do a three by four genetics test, it's one single test that's really easy to do. You take the swab and you swab the inside of your cheek. It tests 157 individual SNPs and it looks at 36 metabolic and biochemical pathways and six key health areas. These are weight balance, your heart health, blood sugar regulation, brain health, fitness and tissue health and hormone health. The 3x4 genetics uses advanced technology. It's known as the Darwin methodology and it determines the impact of individual gene variants on multiple pathways. The pathway-based polygenic scores determines the impact of genes on 36 metabolic areas or pathways. Weighted genetic scores determines the impact threshold for each metabolic pathway.
Speaker 1:So I have offered many genetic tests to patients. Some of them could be as high as $600. And all I get back are some letters of the SNPs, and it can be really hard to interpret. What I like about 3x4 Genetics is I give a user-friendly report with language of color and pictures and personalized visuals. That also improves the patient engagement. Speaker 1:Now, of course I wanted to be my own patient. Zero. I did swab my son Ezra, and I'm waiting for his results. But I became interested in epigenetics a long time ago and around Christmas time I came across an ad on social media for a, a company that uses your DNA to tell you the best exercise to do to be successful on different journeys, and I was so intrigued so I got the test. It sat there for a little bit because I wasn't sure if I wanted to send my DNA through the mail, but I did the test and when it came back I got a very generic report and I was not very impressed. Then, you know, a couple months later I messaged the company and I asked for the raw data of those gene tests and they were very nice. They gave it to me right away, but the report looked like hieroglyphics and all I could think was this is what my patients see when I order genetic tests on them. They're looking at it, probably saying what the heck is this? But I wanted to know what they all meant and I have tested many patients for the MTHFR and the COMT and the DAO and when I get those results back I can see the SNPs, but it's hard to look at a SNP and just know the best way to personalize care without it still feeling like there's more to look at.
Speaker 1:Then, when I confirmed I had SNPs in the MTHFR and COMT, I didn't want to create protocols that were generic and not everybody to follow, because there's so much more to consider. I did a lot of research and even considered going back to school to study genetics, but that was not going to happen. I love to learn but I definitely don't need another degree. So I stumbled upon 3x4 genetics in order to test for Ezra and for myself, and when the results came back I was blown away. I knew I wanted to offer this to my patients and sure I could always order it and just use their reports. But I wanted to really deep dive and learn everything I could and in that process I became certified and now I'm a certified licensed provider with 3x4 Genetics and I'm helping so many people on their own journey. So just to be vulnerable, I'm going to go ahead and walk through my own blueprint, just so you guys can know the information that's in here.
Speaker 1:And again, this is a 32 page report that you get. That's very colorful, it's very pretty. The first page actually says the personal genetic story of Michelle Postal. So this is just attractive within itself. And when you look at the first pages of it, there's a great introduction that talks about how our genes determine who we are and how we respond to the world around us, from the food that we eat to the exercise we do, to the exposure to the environment, and even how we respond to stress. Okay, so it talks about all of your genes and then it shows you, color coded, how these different genes are impacting your health.
Speaker 1:You know, you know it does cover those 36 metabolic pathways across the six health categories. So you get categories of low, medium, high and very high. And the first thing that it kind of goes to is it breaks down, looking at your SNPs, your top three pathways. So everybody's top three pathways are going to be different based on their SNPs. So all of the ones that are purple are going to be very high. But then they look at the different genes and how each thing affects each other and they give it your top three pathways. This is amazing, because if I would have looked at this genetic testing and I would have really flipped out when I saw, what did I have. I think I have 10 very high affected pathways and I would never know where to start because change is the hardest thing to do. So not only does it have your top pathways.
Speaker 1:For example, my top three pathways identified are methylation, which I already knew that I had MTHFR, but it's so generic to say I need to help my methylation, what else? Number two was detoxification. Number three was collagen and joints, which I would have never thought of would be my top three priority. So under methylation, it describes what that is. It tells you for every single pathway, you for every single pathway. It then breaks it down to three diet recommendations, three lifestyle recommendations and then three supplement recommendations. Easy peasy, and it's so bright and colorful. So it goes on to say what methylation is and I will just read to you for this one. We'll go down to collagen and joints because that is very exciting because I've already done podcasts on methylation is. And I will just read to you for this one. We'll go down to collagen and joints because that is very exciting because I've already done podcasts on methylation. But number two was detoxification. So it tells me all about what detoxification is and it gives me three diet recommendations, three lifestyle recommendations and then three supplement recommendations. So let's go down to my third pathway, which was collagen and joints, because this was surprising to me.
Speaker 1:So what it says is all our cells are continuously being renewed by being broken down and replaced by new ones. Collagen is the major structural protein and the foundation of all our soft tissue, which is skin, hair, nails, joints and organs. Variations in collagen genes might affect the structure and function of these areas, causing excessive breakdown of cells without a comparable formation of new cells will result in degeneration. Genes play a large part in the process of collagen formation and breakdown, as does lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise. So how did this end up in my top three? Thank goodness I have the orthomolecular collagen, but let's see what this says.
Speaker 1:So for diet, it says, my three tips are number one ensure two to three servings of collagen daily, of foods that boost collagen production, which are quality animal protein, wild caught seafood, cashews, which I love oats, quinoa, legumes, griefy, griefy green leafy vegetables, bone broth, hemp and pumpkin seeds. I actually can't have pumpkin seeds because of my IgG, so make sure that if you've had your IgG food testing, you're following that as well. Number two for food is consume at least one cup each day of foods that reduce joint inflammation, slows cartilage breakdown and contains sulforaphane, like raw broccoli, cabbage, mustard, bok choy, watercress, horseradish and cauliflower. Number three ensure daily intake of at least two to three foods that support collagen and joints and contain vitamins C, d and biotin Mushrooms left in the sun to increase vitamin D content that's something I had never heard Almonds, eggs, sweet potatoes, berries, citrus fruits, mangoes and bell peppers. So those are my top three diet recommendations for this pathway, which I did not even know collagen and joints was a pathway in your body, but it makes a lot of sense if you know me and my history with my body.
Speaker 1:And then it gives three lifestyle recommendations. Number one is improve joint health with a variety of exercise aerobic strength training, flexibility. Increase the frequency and intensity of exercise slowly. Number two is participate in low impact activities such as bicycling, walking and swimming. Limit extensive high impact training, jump, rope, step aerobics and road running. Oh my gosh, if any of you guys knew me when I was running that half marathon, this might explain some of that. Number three focus on maintaining good posture and form when standing, sitting, bending, reaching and lifting. Attain a healthy strength to weight ratio to prevent joint injuries, and those of you who have seen me sitting at a desk can probably see that, yes, this is an issue.
Speaker 1:And then it comes down to the three recommendations for supplements. And number one it says zinc, magnesium, glycinate, hydrolyzed collagen, vitamin A and biotin, which they give dosages as well. But this is great because I had already identified this with my body and have all of these things now and a lot of that is in my Vicon. And then it tells me number two important for me is vitamin D3, which, if you've ever heard me talk about it, I had a really difficult time before orthomolecular supplements getting my vitamin D over 20. And right now it's good. And then number three it says Boswellia, serrata, curcumin and MSM or methyl silvanomethane. So those are my three top recommendations for supplements. For that collagen and joint pathway, for that collagen and joint pathway. So methylation, detoxification and collagen and joints. And this was just amazing.
Speaker 1:The next part of that blueprint shows all of the gene results and they're color coded so you can see your protective genes. It will have a shield there. You can also see which ones are very high and those are going to be in purple. And oh my gosh, if I look at mine that are very high impact on my, on my life. Let me tell you one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, twenty twenty one, twenty two, three. I have 25 in the in the purple 7, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23. I have 25 in the purple category, so that's 25 genes that are impacting my day-to-day. They do place a star these are called your rock stars of the ones that are significantly impact and I have four there and the interesting thing, one of those are not MTHFR. Yes, the MTHFR is on the list, but actually the top four that are impacting me the worst are the COMT, the GSTM1, the PEMT and the TCN2. So, even though I have MTHFR and I've kind of made adjustments to my day based on knowing I have MTHFR, I was close, I was doing things, but I was still not on the mark because I had not done full DNA testing.
Speaker 1:The next page talks about pathway-based results and this is where you see all 36 pathways and the ones that are in purple are very high impact. I have a lot. So my high impact between the six different systems are methylation, detoxification, collagen and joints, hormone balance. Imagine that, because how do you think I led to offering hormone therapy? I went through my own struggles and figured it out. Had I known this, I would have known that, yes, I was going to have an issue Mood and behavior, which my husband can attest to Exercise response, adipogenesis, vitamin B12, which I have been preaching for a long time now but, yes, it's because I'm genetically impacted um, choline and folate, which goes along with that, mthfr. So you get a very colorful graph that shows you which are high, um, and which ones are medium and which ones are are low, which some of these are going to surprise you as I keep going on, if you're still here listening to me.
Speaker 1:So the next part which I love is it gives you kind of it's almost like a storybook, and the storybook gives you a very clear cellular overview and it talks about how we are a sum of our cells and we are only as healthy as they are. So every cell in our body functions independently, but it is connected to the whole. So, like a small apartment inside a high-rise building, each unit takes care of its own day-to-day maintenance but ultimately it contributes to the overall function of the whole building right. So it kind of goes through and breaks things down in non-medical, very colorful ways so you can see what's going on. So it starts with the methylation process and mine actually says you are not likely methylating adequately, you know. It says prioritize intake of B vitamins, choline and folate foods such as dark leafy greens, eggs, nuts, seeds and whole grains to support optimal methylation.
Speaker 1:Methylation is a biochemical process involved in the production, repair and behavior of genes and metabolic processes. So it goes there. It talks about inflammation. It tells me that I'm prone to chronic inflammation, which that's how Harmony Hub came about anyway, and it will even list, when you get to a purple one like detoxification, which genes you have the superstars to like. This is where my com t and my gstm1 come in. It says that my ability to neutralize and remove toxins is likely poor, and what I love is it does tell you how to help it under each category and also your food choices. It also tells me that my ability to manage oxidative stress might be less than optimal because of my genes, and it tells me how to do that. And then I love how it gives you a picture of the human body and it kind of goes through and shows you how your systems are affected.
Speaker 1:Like it says, I'm highly likely to mood imbalances. Thank you very much. But then it tells me why and what I can do for it, which I've done. So this is why I'm always in a good mood now. If you knew me years ago, I was not. If you knew me years ago, I was not. It says without the right choices, there's potential for cognitive decline as I age and that's very important because we want to stay sharp. So that is one of my purple pathways is memory and brain health.
Speaker 1:Histamine overload for me is a purple as well. It says I'm prone to histamine overload. So this is where you want to identify foods and environmental triggers and prioritize histamine degrading foods and make sure you know that I am all good there. My hormone balance it says your hormone balance is likely impaired and it gives me some hints on how to work on that. Glucose and insulin it says I'm prone to blood sugar dysregulation. Nobody would have thought that I had this many issues right, but again, that's why I'm here.
Speaker 1:It also tells me that there's a moderate likelihood that I may be prone to blood clots. That's important to know. I do have a dad that's had multiple blood clots. He's on a blood thinner. I always thought it was just between surgery or his already bad poor health, but I'm actually genetically predisposed to that. Also, it says I'm prone to raise cholesterol levels. Luckily I don't have high cholesterol. It says I have a moderate likelihood of blood vessel damage. I may experience blood pressure dysregulation and if you guys knew me, after I had Ezra I was on three prescription medicines to control my blood pressure. It says my bone turnover is likely to be imbalanced. So it tells me ways to help that. And it says I am highly susceptible to tissue damage, which is that collagen and joints. And if you guys saw my pictures last year when I broke my ankle on both sides, you'll see that, yes, my soft tissue was destroyed, okay, and some people can fall and hurt themselves and not have that much damage right.
Speaker 1:Then it goes on to your energy overview and here's some interesting things. One of my purples is appetite, satiety intake and it says you likely feel hungry more often and or take longer to feel full. People that have known me before my weight loss journey will agree with you how quickly I get hangry. My husband can attest to that. It does say that my fat cells may be prone to inflammation, which luckily some of these are just medium, which is the pro-inflammatory fat, the energy expenditure and the weight gain and weight loss. They are all just medium, but the adipogenesis is a purple. It says that my potential to readily store fat is highly elevated because I need to support my detox and inflammation. So it kind of goes all around so you can see what's going on and this says that you know your fat cells likely release fuel inefficiently when exercising. So this is why it can kind of break it down to tell you so you're doing the right exercises, so you're not hurting your body when you're trying to do something like exercise. So that is really nice to see as well.
Speaker 1:Next, the activity overview. It talks about training response. Again, the injury for me comes up with a little picture and it says I'm likely prone to soft tissue injuries and then tells me how to prevent it. Endurance is also purple for me, which surprised me. It says I have above average endurance potential and will likely respond well to endurance training. Um, not so much when I was overweight trying to run that half marathon, but even for power it was good. It said my power capacity will likely respond moderately to training. So it talks about all the different. It talks about how I recover from exercise. So it almost looks like a storybook as you go through and you see all of the tips, all of the pictures, all of the information on here. It goes to nutrient overflow, which you know. It does list my PMT SNP under choline, because it says I do have a significant requirement for dietary choline, which is very interesting, because when I did add choline because it says I do have a significant requirement for dietary choline, which is very interesting, because when I did add choline to my supplements a lot of things changed in my body for the better, from mood to health and hormones. So that is interesting. And then it says folate. My ability to optimize or to utilize dietary folate is highly reduced and that has to do with the MTHFR, but it gives me tips on how to treat that.
Speaker 1:One of the most interesting things in my book is that it says you have a rare chance of developing celiac disease, a gut condition associated with exposure to gluten. So then I almost threw this out and said well, you are wrong. Three by four I have celiac. And then I had to really sit down and reflect and think about like, why, why did this happen? And then it came to me very clear I was not born with celiac. I mean, it wasn't until 2012 that I was diagnosed with celiac and I was born in 1977.
Speaker 1:So what it breaks down to is the dirty genes it breaks down to. I had poor detox. I had MTHFR. I could not break down folic acid, which is in everything that has gluten, and I continued to damage myself and hurt myself by eating gluten that I had a reaction in my small intestine on biopsy that showed celiac, but I wasn't born with celiac. I had pizza, bread, baked goods all the way until 2012, until Ezra put that animal cracker in my mouth and we had to call an ambulance. So this makes complete sense how my DNA. I wasn't meant to have celiac. I did it to myself with a standard American diet. And then you know B12 was another one with my gene TCN2, because my ability to absorb and transport B12 was really reduced. So my B12 was always in the 200s and it made no sense because I was taking a form of B12. It just happened not to be the right form for my genes.
Speaker 1:So it also goes into vitamin D, even though it's not a purple, it is a turquoise. And it says that I may have a higher requirement for vitamin D, which, though it's not a purple, it is a turquoise. And it says that I may have a higher requirement for vitamin D, which is so true. Um, not everybody has the same requirement, which is why not everybody should take the same supplementation. Okay, um, let me see. It does say for vitamin C, I do not have an increased demand, which is good. It does say for vitamin C, I do not have an increased demand, which is good. What else, then, what I like?
Speaker 1:After it goes through all of those, it gives you a glossary. So if there's anything in the systems that you're not sure, you can read more information about it, and it goes really in-depth, it doesn't leave any stone unturned. And then, after that, it gives you a list of your genes by each pathway. So mine is the methylation, the detoxification, inflammation, oxidative stress, collagen and joints, hormone balance, mood and behavior, glucose and insulin, bone health, memory, brain health, histamine, overload, blood pressure, cholesterol, vascular health, blood clotting, exercise response, adipogenesis and appetite, satiety and intake, pro-inflammatory fat, energy expenditure and weight gain and weight loss resistance. So those are all the 36 pathways and it shows you all of your genes, all of the impacts and your superstars. Okay, what else Isn't that exciting?
