Heavy Metals, Heavier Hormones

Michele Season 2 Episode 28

What if the unexplained fatigue, mood swings, and hormonal chaos you're experiencing aren't just "normal" health challenges but signs of something more insidious? Heavy metals like mercury, lead, cadmium, and aluminum silently accumulate in our bodies, sabotaging our hormonal systems and creating a cascade of frustrating symptoms that conventional medicine often misses.

This deep dive into metal toxicity reveals how these hidden pollutants disrupt your endocrine system at multiple levels. From thyroid dysfunction (causing weight gain and fatigue) to estrogen dominance (triggering PMS, fibroids, and endometriosis), these metals act as hormone hijackers. We explore how lead and mercury suppress testosterone production, affecting energy and libido in both men and women, while simultaneously putting your adrenal glands under oxidative stress.

Through real clinical examples and personal experience with aluminum toxicity, we uncover the everyday sources of these metals – from antiperspirants and dental fillings to cookware and contaminated food. More importantly, we break down the functional medicine testing methods that can identify your unique toxic burden, including Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) and serum testing approaches.

The good news? Heavy metal detoxification is possible with the right strategy. Learn about evidence-based approaches including specialized binders, glutathione therapy, targeted nutrition, infrared sauna, and lymphatic support that can help your body safely eliminate these toxins and restore hormonal balance. Your unexplained symptoms might finally have an answer – and a solution.

Speaker 1:

Welcome to Harmony Hub Health, where my mission is to provide comprehensive, affordable, integrative care that addresses the root cause of health issues. At the Hub, the focus is on individual patient journeys. I strive to optimize health, vitality and longevity, fostering a community where each person can thrive in body, mind and spirit. All right, let's talk about heavy metal. And no, I'm not talking about your favorite rock band cranking out the jams. I'm talking about those toxic metals that silently sabotage your body system. But while Metallica may be the kings of loud music, heavy metals in your body are the silent villains you don't want to rock out with. You know how, when you listen to a great guitar solo, you feel pumped and energized. Well, heavy metals like mercury, lead and aluminum do the complete opposite. They mess with your hormones, and that's one jam. You don't want to be a part of the worst part. These toxic rock stars sneak in and disrupt everything from your thyroid and estrogen levels to your energy and your mood. So instead of feeling like you're headbanging at a concert, you're stuck in the back row, feeling sluggish, tired and irritable. But here's the good news Unlike some questionable bands that are hard to get rid of, we can kick these heavy metals to the curb and reclaim your health with the right detox plan.

Speaker 1:

Today, I want to focus on how these metals wreak havoc on your hormones. I might even do like a separate podcast on how metals mess with other parts of your body, because, trust me, there's a lot more than hormones at play. But for today, let's just dive into how heavy metals are disrupting your body's hormone concert. Have you ever felt like you're doing everything right with your health, yet you still struggle with fatigue, mood swings, weight gain and irritability. Maybe your hormones are out of whack, but you can't quite pinpoint why. It might be time to take a deeper look at heavy metals, those sneaky little culprits that can cause chaos in your body's hormonal balance. When heavy metals like lead, mercury and arsenic settle in, they don't just burden your organs, they hijack your hormones. If you're dealing with any of the following symptoms, it could be a sign that heavy metals are wreaking havoc on your system Fatigue that doesn't go away no matter how much you sleep, brain fog or difficulty concentrating, weight gain, especially around the abdomen. Irregular periods or PMS, symptoms that just feel out of control, mood swings, irritability, anxiety, low libido or sexual dysfunction, thyroid dysfunction or hair thinning, and digestive issues like bloating and constipation. These symptoms could be linked to the toxic impact heavy metals have on your hormone systems. When metals interfere with your hormone production and regulation, things start to go south fast. Let's dive into how this happens and, more importantly, how you can detoxify and restore balance using functional medicine.

Speaker 1:

Here are some effects that heavy metals have on the body that are beyond hormones. We have neurological effects. Heavy metals like mercury, lead and aluminum can significantly impact the brain and lead to memory problems, brain fog, cognitive decline and learning difficulties, headaches and migraines, tremors, anxiety, irritability, neurodevelopmental delays in children. Then there's the immune system dysfunction. So metals like cadmium and arsenic can suppress immune function and lead to increased susceptibility to infections, autoimmune diseases like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic inflammation throughout the body and allergic reactions and respiratory issues. Then we have the heart effects, the cardiovascular effects. Toxic metals such as lead, cadmium and mercury can also contribute to heart problems that lead to high blood pressure, hardening of your arteries, increased risk of stroke and heart disease and poor circulation and vascular dysfunction.

Speaker 1:

Don't forget about digestive issues. You know metals like arsenic and mercury affect your gut and lead to leaky gut syndrome, which allows toxins to leak into the bloodstream, bloating, constipation and diarrhea, increased gut permeability making it harder to absorb nutrients, and chronic digestive discomfort or irritable bowel symptoms. Then there's skin problems. Heavy metals can accumulate in the skin and cause acne, eczema, psoriasis, premature aging and wrinkles due to the oxidative stress. Who wants that? Rashes or skin irritation from metal exposure? Then we have the effects on your kidney and liver dysfunction. So metals like cadmium and arsenic can impair the function of vital organs like your kidneys, your liver, and it can lead to kidney disease and renal failure. It can lead to fatty liver or liver cirrhosis and it can lead to reduced detoxification capacity, causing the body to struggle with eliminating waste. You want to do that trash takeout right?

Speaker 1:

Then we have the endocrine disruption, because, affecting hormones like thyroid, estrogen, testosterone, heavy metals disrupt also your insulin regulation. It contributes to type 2 diabetes, your vitamin D metabolism and your bone health. It increases the risk of osteoporosis. Then there's a reproductive system. So metals like lead, cadmium and mercury have been linked to reduced fertility in men and women, miscarriage or preterm birth, and sperm quality and motility issues. These are just a few of the many ways that heavy metals can impact your body. The best approach is to test, not guess, when it comes to identifying the root causes of these symptoms. Detoxing metals requires a very customized approach to ensure safe and effective removal. So what I want to focus on today is just how heavy metals disrupt your hormones.

Speaker 1:

Now, heavy metals are expert saboteurs when it comes to your hormones. First is the thyroid disruption Heavy metals like mercury, lead and cadmium love to mess with your hormones. First is the thyroid disruption Heavy metals like mercury, lead and cadmium love to mess with your thyroid. These metals block iodine uptake. They interfere with thyroid enzymes and impair your body's ability to convert inactive thyroid hormone T4, into that active form, t3. This causes hypothyroidism or a sluggish metabolism. You gain weight, you lose your hair, you get fatigued. It's like trying to run your car without any gas and nothing really works right.

Speaker 1:

Then we have your estrogen imbalance Metals like aluminum and cadmium. They are sneaky estrogen imitators. They mess up your liver's ability to break down excess estrogen and when that happens, your estrogen levels spike and it leads to estrogen dominance. The symptoms are frustratingly familiar PMS, super heavy periods, breast tenderness and even conditions like fibroids and endometriosis. These metals amplify estrogen's effects and makes you feel like your hormones are just an overload. Then we have testosterone suppression. This is what I actually witnessed this past week. If you're feeling low on energy, poor libido, having trouble building muscle, lead and mercury might be to blame. I had an HTMA that came back that was super high in lead, and the initial reason this person came to see me was for some of these symptoms. Those metals suppress testosterone production by affecting the leydig cells, so these are the cells that are responsible for making testosterone, and it doesn't just affect men. Women can also feel the impact in the form of fatigue, poor stress, resilience and diminished motivation.

Speaker 1:

Let's talk about cortisol and adrenal dysfunction. Heavy metals put oxidative stress on your adrenal glands, which are in charge of producing cortisol, your stress hormone. The more stress these glands endure from toxins, the more your cortisol production just goes haywire. You can experience symptoms like anxiety, salt cravings and difficulty recovering from stress. Okay, you're constantly in that fight or flight mode and it leaves you wired but tired.

Speaker 1:

I want to take a look at the heavy metals that are most likely causing hormonal imbalances. The first one I see most is lead, and the toxic metal is a known disruptor for testosterone production. It damages the nervous system and can lead to mood swings, fatigue and even poor cognition function. You can get lead sources from old paint, plumbing pipes, certain cosmetics and contaminated soil. Mercury is another very common one. It's known for disrupting thyroid function and inhibits that T4 to T3 conversion. Mercury can also suppress your testosterone levels, but you find mercury in that large predatory fish that are also bottom feeders, dental fillings and certain industrial processes you can find mercury. Arsenic is another big one. It messes with your insulin sensitivity and it leads to weight gain and metabolic dysfunction. It also plays a role in estrogen dominance and it makes it harder for the liver to break down estrogen properly. You can find arsenic in some rice, pesticides, contaminated water and probably one of the most common that I see is the aluminum. This is notorious estrogen mimicker, I call it so. It contributes to estrogen dominance and conditions like fibroids and endometriosis, and the biggest source I've seen is antiperspirants, cookware and some food additives.

Speaker 1:

But when it comes to understanding the role heavy metals play in your health, functional medicine testing is very important. You don't have to guess whether metals are disrupting your hormones or causing chronic symptoms. With the right test you can identify toxic metal exposure, track your body's ability to detoxify and develop a personalized plan to clear those metals out. I want to talk about two of the most effective functional medicine testing methods that I use. One is the HTMA, or the hair tissue mineral analysis. The other one is just serum toxic metal testing from Access Labs.

Speaker 1:

The hair tissue mineral analysis is a very powerful test that gives insight into long-term levels of heavy metals in your body as well as your mineral status over the last three to four months. It's a very holistic look at your body's ability to detox and the underlying imbalances caused by heavy metal exposure. Think of it like a snapshot of your body's metal history. So HTMA can tell you chronic exposure. It identifies long-term exposure to metals like mercury, cadmium, lead and aluminum, showing you how these metals are building up in your body over time. It does show others as well. I'm just naming these because they're the most frequent that I see. It also shows mineral imbalances because metals mess with your mineral balance. The HTMA helps to detect deficiencies or imbalances, for example, low magnesium or zinc, and that could be affecting your detox capacity and your hormone regulation. It also can highlight your oxidative stress, which is caused by the buildup of free radicals from metal toxicity, and it helps pinpoint sluggish methylation processes. And the HTMA can show patterns in mineral ratios, like your calcium to phosphorus or your zinc to copper, that reflect thyroid dysfunction, adrenal burnout and blood sugar regulation. So the HTMA is best for chronic, low-grade toxic exposure clients with fatigue or hormonal imbalances and mood swings, or anybody with autoimmune conditions, mthfr mutations or genetic variants that impact detox, like ComT, and it's great for tracking long-term mineral trends and overall detox capacity. It's just a hair sample, so it's affordable. It's useful for even children and animals just a hair sample, so it's affordable. It's useful for even children and animals and it's so great for monitoring how heavy metals accumulate over time and identifying those who might be suffering silently from toxicity.

Speaker 1:

While the hair tissue mineral analysis gives you long-term view of metal exposure, a blood test serum toxic metal testing gives a snapshot of your body's exposure to metals in your blood. This type of test is ideal when you suspect acute exposure or need to assess how effectively your body is eliminating toxins through, say, chelation therapy. So for serum tests it can show the immediate burden of metals in your body, like mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic, by analyzing levels in your blood or urine. It is very ideal if you've had a recent exposure or suspect high levels due to environmental factors, food or a workplace exposure, or if you're going under you know chelation therapy then that can track how well your body is clearing out a metal. Serum and urine tests can also provide good insight into how well your kidneys are clearing metals for the system, helping to assess overall detox capacity. And it also can check levels of essential minerals like zinc and selenium to ensure that your body's detox systems aren't compromised.

Speaker 1:

So the blood test is great for that acute exposure to metals, to look at the effectiveness of the removal process, or for immediate high level exposure from industrial or environmental sources. So it gives you a very fast, real-time assessment of how much metal circulating in your body. But remember, most metal does settle down in your tissues and your organs. So if you do a blood test, it's not going to be as accurate because the metal knows how to hide. It's very smart If you've been exposed to toxins recently or need to see the results of a detox therapy. That's when I would pick the blood test. But the ultimate approach would be you know, both the HTMA and serum metal testing, because HTMA helps you track chronic exposure whereas the serum helps you assess acute exposure and detox protocols. So many like to combine both tests for a more comprehensive picture, and that's what I like to do.

Speaker 1:

Heavy metals are often the unseen culprits behind chronic symptoms and hormone imbalances. And to get ahead of them, functional medicine test helps you pinpoint the exact metals affecting your body. Understand your body's detox capacity you might know exactly what metal you have, but if you don't know how your detox capacity is, it's going to be really hard to get rid of it, and we want to really track your detox progress and adjust the protocol as needed. It and we want to really track your detox progress and adjust the protocol as needed. So at Harmony Hub Health, I specialize in both HTMA and serum toxic metal testing. I can guide you through the process, helping you assess your exposure, understanding your symptoms and develop a personalized plan to detox safely and effectively.

Speaker 1:

Before diving into any protocol, it is very important to identify the source of the heavy metal. That is the very critical first step in functional medicine, because you need to stop the exposure before you can begin the detox process effectively. I would say the most common sources are toxic dental fillings If you are in the Maryland area, I have the perfect, perfect dentist if you need a new dentist. Environmental exposure, from air pollution to contaminated water, dietary sources to personal care products. When I do a detox.

Speaker 1:

You know, binders are substances that can safely bind to heavy metals and help remove them from the body through your digestive tract. They are used to capture metals and prevent them from being reabsorbed during detox. So some of the most common binders are activated charcoal. That's a powerful detoxifier that binds toxin in the gut and helps remove them through stool. Corella is a green algae that acts as a binder for heavy metals, particularly mercury and lead. I use that with bentonite clay. It's a clay that binds toxins in the gut and supports digestive health. Zeolite is a mineral with a honeycomb structure that can trap and neutralize toxic metals. Then there's pectin, found in fruit like apples. Pectin binds to metals and aids in detoxification. But always, always, always, use binders under the supervision of a practitioner, because improper use can lead to nutrient depletion or reabsorption of toxins. So you definitely want to make sure someone is watching you. I love to use the binders in combination with the Vicon Customs. That way I know that there will not be nutrient depletion and everything will go much more safely.

Speaker 1:

The next therapy that I do in practice is glutathione therapy. This is one of the body's most powerful antioxidants and it plays a critical role in the detoxification process. It helps neutralize free radicals that are produced during detox and it supports phase two liver detox. Glutathione can be taken as liposomal glutathione. This is a highly absorbable form of glutathione that supports liver detox and promotes the elimination of heavy metals. I use Aura Wellness glutathione because I know it is the best. I always carry it in the shelf at Monarch Beauty and Spa. Then there's NAC, the N-acetylcysteine. This is a precursor to glutathione and can be used to support glutathione levels in the body as well. I have injectable glutathione and I also have glutathione infusions. That is for a more aggressive detoxification, especially in patients with high metal burden. Iv glutathione can be used to directly flood the system with detox support. It's amazing.

Speaker 1:

And then there's a chelation therapy that involves specific agents that bind to heavy metals and help remove them from the bloodstream and the tissues. It could be taken orally or through IV infusion. So some common ones are EDTA I can try to say the names, but I always mess them up it's ethylenedionetroxidic acid I think I nailed it, but it's commonly used to bind metals like lead, cadmium and calcium. Where DMPS is dimercaptopropane, I can say that one. Sulfonate, that's a sulfur, containing compound that binds metals like mercury and arsenic. Then we have DMSA, dimercaptosuccanic acid. That is powerful for lead and mercury, often used in children that have really heavy metal poisoning. I do not treat children for poisoning. These therapies really need to be supervised by a healthcare professional because you don't want to shake up the system and throw a lot of these metals into circulation without balancing minerals and making sure you also have binders. You can have a lot of side effects by shaking up these heavy metals.

Speaker 1:

Certain nutrients are also important for supporting your body's natural detox pathways, especially in your liver and the kidneys. These are your primary organs for detoxification. So the B vitamins I know I sound like a broken record. All I do, I feel like, is talk about B vitamins, but especially B6 and B12 and methylfolate. They all support methylation and detox pathways, particularly for those with MTHFR mutations. But even if you don't have the mutations, you definitely need the B vitamins.

Speaker 1:

Magnesium helps with cellular detox and supports overall detoxification. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps neutralize free radicals and supports liver detox. Selenium is such a crucial nutrient for glutathione peroxidase. It's an enzyme that supports detox. Then alpha lipoic acid, also known as ALA. This is another potent antioxidant that can help regenerate other antioxidants like glutathione and support the removal of mercury and other metals.

Speaker 1:

Infrared sauna is another great tool for detoxing heavy metals. It promotes sweating, which is a natural way for detoxing heavy metals. It promotes sweating, which is a natural way for the body to expel toxins. Sweating through the skin helps to release metals like mercury and arsenic, which can be stored in fat cells. Regular sauna sessions also help increase blood flow and stimulate lymphatic drainage, so that supports overall detoxification. And supporting that lymphatic system is so important in detoxing metals. The lymphatic system helps carry toxins away from tissues and to the liver for processing. So key ways to support lymphatic drainage are dry brushing. This stimulates lymphatic flow and helps move toxins out of your body.

Speaker 1:

Castor oil packs If you place over your liver or your intestines, it can help stimulate detoxification and support the lymphatic system. Anytime I'm doing a large detox protocol, I always include castor oil packs. And then there's PEMP therapy, the pulse electromagnetic field. This is a form of therapy that can enhance lymphatic drainage and help mobilize toxins. One of the biggest tools you can use is just a detox focused diet. This is a form of therapy that can enhance lymphatic drainage and help mobilize toxins.

Speaker 1:

One of the biggest tools you can use is just a detox-focused diet. This supports your body's ability to eliminate metals and other toxins. Key foods to include would be cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, kale, cabbage they all support liver detox pathways. Fiber-rich foods like chia seeds, flax seeds and whole grains they help eliminate toxins through the stool Garlic, onions and turmeric they all are rich in sulfur compounds that assist in metal detoxification. And then antioxidant-rich foods like berries, green leafy vegetables and green tea are used to combat oxidative stress during the detox process. Just make sure that if you're working with me and we've done your food sensitivities, that you're following along with the food sensitivities as well. Next we have stress management, because chronic stress can impair detox pathways. So it's important to incorporate stress management techniques to your detox plan. This could be deep breathing exercises, yoga, regular physical activity or mindful meditation. They all help reduce stress to support your body's detox processes and minimize the burden on your adrenal glands, which are already under stress from heavy metals.

Speaker 1:

Before beginning any detox protocol, it is important to test for heavy metals and assess the body's ability to detox. I know there was a good while where I felt my health was on a never-ending roller coaster, and despite doing everything right eating well, exercising and managing my stress I couldn't shake some of the fatigue and weight gain that seemed to follow me around. It wasn't until I took a deeper dive into functional medicine that I discovered I myself was dealing with aluminum toxicity. Aluminum had quietly built up in my system over the years and it was wreaking havoc. And I also have MTHFR mutations, which means my detox pathways don't work as efficiently as they should. My methylation cycle that's the process that your body uses to detoxify, repair and regulate hormones was not functioning well. No wonder I was struggling with energy, mood swings and just a sluggish metabolism.

Speaker 1:

So the first step of my journey to healing was realizing I needed to stop the cycle. I had to find out where aluminum was coming from so I could eliminate the source. Me. It turned out to be exposure from everyday products like antiperspirants, cookware, even food packaging. Once I identified the sources, I was able to eliminate them and stop the toxic load from getting worse. Next I had to work on clearing the aluminum that had already accumulated. I used binders like zeolite, charcoal, diametis, earth. I had to throw it all in to keep the metals from reabsorbing and getting stuck in my system.

Speaker 1:

Another cornerstone of my detox process was glutathione, so this powerful antioxidant was my go-to for supporting my liver and boosting my phase two detox pathways. In the process, I even got my husband addicted to glutathione, so he's been using it for quite some time. I have even moved to injectable glutathione because it really enhances my body's natural ability to clear up metals and heal at that cellular level the bottom line. It is critical to identify the source of the toxin so you can break the cycle Without knowing where it's coming from. It's critical to identify the source of the toxin so you can break the cycle Without knowing where it's coming from. It's hard to stop the buildup.

Speaker 1:

Once you address the root causes, things do start to shift. For me it did. My energy returned, my skin cleared up, the brain fog was not there. It's been a game changer in my wellness journey. In the past week alone, I have seen new patients dealing with heavy metal toxicity. That has caused everything from erectile dysfunction, hashimoto's thyroiditis to severe estrogen dominance, and this is why I love functional medicine. We don't just guess at the problem, we test for it. Then we create a personalized and individualized care plan that is customized to each person's situation and needs. So if you're struggling with similar symptoms, I highly recommend getting tested to see if heavy metals are playing a role.

Speaker 1:
