Floating: Your Nervous System’s Version of “Do Not Disturb.”
Your brain has a reset button, and it might look like a sleek white pod filled with warm, magnesium-rich water. We take you inside the science and the experience of floating to show how sensory withdrawal and Epsom salt saturation can lower cortisol, reduce inflammation, and move the body from fight or flight into real repair. If you’ve been running on fumes, battling pain, or chasing sleep that never sticks, this is a practical roadmap to relief that blends neuroscience and functional medicine.
We break down what actually happens in a float tank, why transdermal magnesium matters for muscle tension, migraines, and blood sugar stability, and how the theta brainwave state supports focus, creativity, and emotional regulation. You’ll hear why a closed pod outperforms open pools for zero light, zero sound, and consistent temperature—and why people with anxiety often end up preferring the pod once they control the lid, light, and music. From fibromyalgia and autoimmune pain to athletes seeking recovery and professionals drowning in stress, floating provides a weightless reset that both the body and mind recognize as safety.
We also explore hormone and detox benefits: calmer cortisol, steadier melatonin, improved cycle comfort, and sulfur pathway support for those navigating MTHFR, mold, or heavy metals. Then we connect the dots with integrative care—how floats pair with NAD, IV therapy, peptides, GI protocols, and hormone balancing to amplify outcomes. If you’re local to Westminster, Maryland, you’ll get the scoop on our timeline, memberships, and how to book your session as soon as the tank is live.

Welcome to Harmony Hub Health, where my mission is to provide comprehensive, affordable, integrative care that addresses the root cause of health issues. At the Hub, the focus is on individual patient journeys. I strive to optimize health, vitality, and longevity, fostering a community where each person can thrive in body, mind, and spirit. So today I want to talk about where functional medicine meets real life. And I want to talk about healing your body in a way that your traditional doctor probably has never even mentioned. I want to dive into a favorite secret weapon for the nervous system. You know, something that looks a little futuristic, feels a little magical, and has the science to back it all the way up. And it is a float tank. I am so excited to announce that Harmony Hub Health, when it moves to Westminster, Maryland, we are going to have a float tank. And I've been telling people about this float tank, and they look at me like, what are you talking about? A float tank is a big closed sensory deprivation pod that basically gives your brain a hard reset and your body a vacation from gravity. If you've never floated, this episode is going to make you want to. And if you have, you're about to understand why your body felt so regulated after. I want to talk about what actually happens inside a float tank, why magnesium-saturated water is a game changer, and how sensory deprivation impacts cortisol hormones and inflammation, and who might benefit the most from my stressed-out moms to my chronic illness warriors to menopause, to my overachievers who cannot remember the last time they actually relaxed on purpose. Floating is one of the fastest ways to shift from flight or flight into a true repair mode. And I'm gonna break down the functional medicine physiology behind it without the fluff and without any of that woo-woo. So, what actually happens in a float tank? You float effortlessly in warm water, saturated with hundreds of pounds of Epsom salts, which is magnesium sulfate. So this combination can remove gravity from your joints, it can calm your nervous system, it improves circulation, um, it reduces sensory input to almost zero, and it triggers a deep meditative brainwave, it's your theta waves that most people only achieve in advanced meditation. This is the fastest way to switch from fight or flight to rest and repair. This is your sympathetic to parasympathetic. And if you're wondering, well, how are you gonna do that? This is magnesium superabsorption. The magnesium-rich water allows transdermal magnesium uptake, which is one of the fastest ways to restore magnesium levels. And why does this matter? Oh yes, it really, really matters because it can lower cortisol, it can improve your sleep, it can relax your muscles, it reduces migraines, it supports over 300 enzyme reactions in your body, it helps to stabilize your blood sugar, and it gives you detox support through proper methylation. So hello to my MTHFR people out there. If you have muscle tension, anxiety, PMS, chronic stress, or sleep issues. I think that just named every single one of most of my patients, but your body is practically starving for more magnesium and it switches off the stress response and it does it very quickly. Floating activates the parasympathetic nervous system. So it lowers cortisol, it reduces inflammation, it gives your adrenal glands an actual break. So if you have chronic stress, if you are burnt out, if you have dysautonomia, um, adrenal fatigue, I know um that can get an eye roll from conventional care, but this is the functional medicine term, adrenal fatigue, anxiety, emotional overwhelm. This cannot come soon enough. So if your body has been stuck in survival mode, think of this tank as your reset button, okay? And just the fact that it can reduce pain and inflammation, the body becomes weightless. Gravity no longer compresses your joints, your spine, your hips, your shoulders, your neck. This alone is transformational if you have fibromyalgia or chronic pain, um, any autoimmune disease, if you get migraines, if you have TMJ, postural strain, or just that post-workout inflammation. Maybe you're coming out of the gym and you need some recovery. Many people get the best pain relief that they've felt in years. And what about the just the brain function and mental clarity? Float takes put you into that relaxed theta brainwave state. This is the same state the brain hits during deep meditation and that early sleep cycle, which leads to improved focus, enhanced creativity, you get better memory, you have faster cognitive processing, and you have emotional regulation. Wow. Okay. And the hormone support. This can really support your hormones because floating helps rebalance your cortisol, your melatonin, all of your neurotransmitters, I mean, your estrogen progesterone ratios indirectly, it can be supported by just stress-modulated pathways. All right. And a lot of clients do improve uh their sleep wake cycle, their whole sleep is just better, they have better menstrual cycles, they have more libido, they have less irritability and fewer stress-related hormone symptoms. So everybody's significant other should be sending them to the tank. Hormones love a regulated nervous system. One of the effects that is one of my favorite is that it can support your detoxification pathways. A regulated nervous system gives you better digestion, gives you better lymphatic flow, better methylation, and phase one, phase two liver detox pathways. Magnesium sulfate contributes to your sulfur pathways, which is so crucial for MTHFR. It is important for mold detox and heavy metal mobilization. So all of my patients that have seen all of these heavy metals show up in their hair tissue mineral analysis, besides binders, hello, here, let's support your detox pathway. So anybody that's even doing the liver detox with the core restore, or if they're doing a protocol from their GI map or any heavy metal detox, um, any mold or mycotoxin protocol, all of my patients on NAD or ozone therapy or peptides, floating will amplify your results. So if you're wondering if floating is for you, I'm gonna say basically it's it's good for everybody. But here's a breakdown of who I recommend the float tank for. I recommend the float tank for high stress people running on empty, which is pretty much my entire patient base. Um if you have chronic pain, if you have inflammation, if you're an athlete or a weekend warrior, um if you have insomnia, restless sleep, anybody with anxiety, ADHD, or sensory overload. Um, if you're doing a functional medicine detox or any type of methylation support, if you're on AGLP1 and you need some nervous system regulation and inflammation control, um, all of my women that are menopausal and perimenopausal that needs cortisol reduction, uh, busy moms, business owners who can't remember the last time they were actually able to exhale. And people healing from chronic illness, Lyme, mold, EBV, autoimmune, MCAS, it's one of the few therapies that supports every system in the body. I am getting a closed pod, and I do think that it's the best option. Um, I'm not getting an open pool. There are some float um tanks that are open, but closed pods provide zero external light, um, zero external sound, complete sensory withdrawal, um, consistent temperature inside, stronger parasympathetic activation, higher magnesium concentration, and deeper therapeutic results. People with anxiety often think that they prefer an open tank. I have done an open tank. I was a little cold, um, but 99% of them love the pod because you do control the lid, you control light and music if you want it, and you can step out anytime you want to. It feels very cozy, not claustrophobic. Think of like a womb spa, not an MRI machine. At Harmony Hub Health, for the full experience, you can integrate the float tank with a lot of the functional medicine programs that we offer, whether you want to combine floating with your NAD or your IV therapy, your peptide therapy, your GI protocol, hormone balancing, even body sculpting and lymphatic drainage. This is where the science meets a spa. You're not just floating, okay? You are repairing. This is one place where every system of the body gets to calm down, restore, repair, reset, and recalibrate. It's neuroscience, physiology, and functional medicine working all together in a tank. Your nervous system has been begging for this, and now you're gonna have it right here at Harmony Hub Health. We're estimating the tank to probably be ready for business, hopefully January. Um, everything is moving very fast right now. So it's gonna be coming soon. You'll find um some of the information on my website. I'm gonna keep adding it as we get closer to time so you can schedule your floats. There will be memberships and there'll be integrated packages so that you can incorporate the float tank into whatever program you are doing at Harmony Hub Health. You can find my website at www.harmonyhubhealth.com. If you have some questions, you can also email me at Michelle M I C H E L E at harmonyhubhealth.com. You could even send a text to area code 4105754274. So whether you're dealing with stress or inflammation, chronic illness, hormone chaos, burnout, or you just want an hour where no one can find you, you're gonna want to get in this float tank. Okay. Your reset button is waiting for you to make this a point. And for a quick disclaimer, you know, float tanks are incredible, but they are not a magical cure and not a substitute for your medications or a loophole that lets you ignore your health entirely. If you're pregnant, if you have uncontrolled medical conditions, if you have open wounds, or think you're gonna use this pod to detox your entire life in one session, please talk to your practitioner first. Um, preferably yours, but I won't be offended if you choose me. Floating is safe, it's relaxing, it's wildly therapeutic, but it still requires common sense. Listening to this podcast does not make me your medical provider, even if you wish it did. So enjoy the information, enjoy afloat, but keep your healthcare decision making in the grown up category.
