The Terrain Before the Treatment: An Autoimmune Healing Journey

She’s 44, raising two kids, building a career, and used to crushing CrossFit five days a week. Then stress stacks up: caregiving, sleep loss, burnout, repeated antibiotics, and the slow slide into fatigue, bloating, constipation, 3 a.m. waking, anxiety, joint stiffness, migraines, weight gain, brain fog, and irregular cycles. Labs point toward Hashimoto’s and autoimmunity, but the question that matters most is the one she keeps asking: why did this happen?
We take you behind the scenes of how we think at Harmony Hub Health. Instead of chasing a single diagnosis, we map the full timeline and look for root causes that drive inflammation and immune dysregulation: stress physiology, nervous system overload, gut dysfunction and dysbiosis, toxin or mold exposure concerns, nutrient and mineral depletion, and perimenopause changes that can hide under everything. You’ll hear why we start with terrain optimization and what that first foundation phase can include: removing inflammatory triggers, rebuilding mineral reserves, supporting digestion, stabilizing blood sugar, improving sleep, and teaching you what your labs actually mean so you can take ownership.
Then we demystify ozone autohemotherapy. Yes, it sounds intense at first, so I explain it clearly: how the process works, why medical ozone is used as controlled oxidative signaling, and what we’re aiming for with mitochondria support, circulation, antioxidant pathways, and resilience. We also share how results unfold over weeks, what improved, what still needed fine-tuning with bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, and why the hardest part of healing is often compliance when you’re already exhausted.
If you’ve ever felt like your body betrayed you, this conversation is a reminder that symptoms have a story, and you can find chapter one. Subscribe, share this with someone who feels “soul tired,” and leave a review so more people can find the root-cause path.

Welcome And Care Philosophy
SPEAKER_00Welcome to Harmony Hub Health, where my mission is to provide comprehensive, affordable, integrative care that addresses the root cause of health issues. At the Hub, the focus is on individual patient journeys. I strive to optimize health, vitality, and longevity, fostering a community where each person can thrive in body, mind, and spirit.
Why A Case Study Now
SPEAKER_00Today I want to do more of a case study. I already had the subject of oxidative stress and free radicals that I had planned to talk about today, but then I had a patient visit me this week, and I thought, oh, this is such a good case. And it may be a case that you're listening to that you might resonate with. Think about this.
Sarah’s Downhill Symptom Timeline
SPEAKER_00Okay, this is Sarah. Of course, that's not her real name, but she's 44. She has two kids. She has a busy career. She's also a single mom. She's always the person that everyone else seemed to rely on. But when she came to see me, she barely recognized herself. Okay. Three years before she walked into Harmony Hub Health, she was thriving. She was exercising five days a week. And when I say exercise, I'm talking about CrossFit. Okay. She had energy. She was sleeping well. She was maintaining her weight. She felt mentally sharp. And then life happened. Within 18 months, okay, her father became ill. Work stress went up. She started to not sleep as well. She experienced severe burnout. She couldn't even exercise anymore. She had multiple rounds of antibiotics for recurrent sinus infections. And then, yes, that word, COVID happened. Then she had more stress. And then things slowly started unraveling. Um at first, her symptoms seemed very subtle. She was having fatigue. She couldn't really recover. If she did try to exercise, she was having constipation, she was bloating a lot, she had worsening PMS. She was waking up at 3 a.m. every single morning, and she had anxiety that she never really had before. Then all of a sudden, it seemed like her symptoms began to snowball. This is morning joint stiffness to where she couldn't even move. She had dry eyes. She was suffering from migraines. She noticed her hair was thinning, her face was puffy, she had brain fog. She gained 22 pounds. Her cycles were irregular. She was getting these random skin rashes. She still wasn't sleeping. And she felt exhausted. So her doctor just sent her to rheumatology, which her labs did show a positive ANA. She did have elevated thyroid antibodies. She did have some mild inflammatory markers that were elevated. So they diagnosed her with Hashimoto's. And she was told, I'm gonna give you this medication prescription for your thyroid and we're gonna monitor things. But Sarah kept asking, well, why? How did this happen?
Root Cause Mapping Beyond Labels
SPEAKER_00When she came to see me at Hermony Hub Health, our first visit wasn't, you know, hey, what supplement do you want, or what medication should we prescribe? Instead, we spent almost 90 minutes just connecting dots because autoimmune conditions never appear out of nowhere. The immune system usually doesn't wake up one morning and randomly choose chaos, okay? We reviewed her stress history, her years of caregiving stress, her burnout, her sleep deprivation, her high sympathetic output. We talked about her environmental exposures, you know, prior water damage concerns, multiple antibiotic exposures from sinus infections, um, possible mold history, and then her digestive symptoms. She had constipation, she had frequent bloating, um, she was having reactions to food, and she was having a lot of alternating bowel changes. And then her hormones, and she actually put on my desk a Ziploc bag that had hormones that she got from another local provider. Um, and I never wanted down any other provider. I'm sure they have their own method, but she handed me a packet of I think it was androgel, and was told to try to apply a certain amount to her body a day. And I just cringed, okay. Um, but her her her cycles were becoming shorter. She was having night waking, she was irritable, she had no libido, she was gaining weight, especially around her abdomen, um, which is is crazy because the person that gave her um the little packet of test male testosterone also offered her GLP1 during this time, mind you. Um, she couldn't build muscle, and at this point I wasn't thinking, like this like Hashimoto's? No, no, no. This is a complete terrain dysfunction. So this is another thing I want to say about Harmony Hub Health, and this is where I want to really bring it home to you because Sarah's story is so important. But the bigger lesson is this no two patients need the same treatment plan, not even close. Two women can walk into Harmony Hub Health with fatigue, brain fog, autoimmune symptoms, weight gain, inflammation, complaining of their hormones, and they can have completely different root causes. One may have mold exposure, okay? One might have insulin resistance, one may have gut dysfunction, one may have nervous system overload, one can have mineral depletion, one can have perimetopause hiding under everything. Same symptoms, different story. That's why I don't believe in giving people the same supplements or giving the same peptides or the same hormones, okay? Everybody gets this autoimmune protocol because your body is not a template. Um, sorry, I just had to go through that in my own head. But people do usually start with the same
The 12-Week Terrain Foundation
SPEAKER_00steps. First, we optimize the terrain. Um, most programs do begin with 12 weeks of terrain work because before hormones, before peptides, before aggressive protocols, before advanced regenerative therapies, before trying to force your body into healing, we have to strengthen the foundation because if the terrain is unstable, everything else becomes harder. The first 12 weeks I focus on inflammatory triggers. This is where people do their food IgG testing. Um, we're looking for antibodies to food and food reactions, any gut irritants, any toxin burden. We're gonna remove all of those. We want to replace minerals. This is where I love the hair tissue mineral analysis because it tells a full story. We look at digestive support, sleep support, um, but those nutrient deficiencies have to be addressed. Um, when we look at the gut, we really want to re-inoculate. This is the microbiome support. Um we want to repair the nervous system regulation, cellular support, um, inflammation reduction, and mitochondrial health because sometimes people, you know, they're not broken. Sometimes they're just very overwhelmed. During those 12 weeks, patients don't just simply receive lab interpretations, they do receive education. Uh, many patients receive my functional medicine manual because I want people to understand what is happening, not just simply follow instructions. Um, because if I tell someone, hey, your ferritin is low, your cortisol is dysregulated, you have terrain dysfunction, and they don't understand what that means, then nothing changes. Okay. Knowledge does create ownership and ownership creates action. If someone is working through a metabolic dysfunction, um I do take them through a structured 12-week metabolic course because metabolism is more than eat less and move more. Most people have already tried that many, many times. Um, healing isn't, you know, checking a lab, giving a supplement, and then disappearing. Okay. Healing is evaluate, adjust, optimize, repeat. Patients can meet with me every single month when they have a program. At the end of their 12 weeks, we can reassess. Sometimes we continue optimizing. Sometimes we uncover deeper layers. Sometimes we transition into maintenance.
Gut Testing Minerals And Hormones
SPEAKER_00I did start Sarah on biodential hormone replacement at that time because she was already on some synthetics from another provider and that packet of testosterone. Um, but you know, when you do add hormones into dysfunction, it can sometimes feel like turning up a speaker with blown wiring. So I do like for people to be prepared first, but for Sarah, we we did kind of just go with the hormones because of that. The other thing that we did was some gut testing. Um, she just had so many GI complaints that we did a GI map and it did confirm her dyspiosis. She was very low in beneficial bacteria. She had really high inflammatory markers, um, she had dysfunction of her intestinal barrier, and she had a lot of signs of poor digestion. So we dove into that and really worked on the terrain. We did the hair tissue mineral analysis and we found that her low ratio of sodium to potassium, um, she was depleted of all tissue magnesium. Um, she had a stress pattern. Um, and for Sarah, her nervous system really looked stuck in survival mode. This is one of the reasons why I love HTMA because I am fascinated with the autonomic nervous system. Um, your immune system and your nervous system are constantly talking to each other. So after that, this is when things got really interesting.
Ozone Autohemotherapy Demystified
SPEAKER_00Um, this is when we started ozone therapy. We already had nutrition support that we were doing. She was already getting some gut support. She was on an orthomolecular protocol. We were replacing her minerals, we were optimizing her sleep, we were supporting her stress. She was using pemph at home, um, which we do have one in office if you do not have one of those. Um, she also had a near infrared mat. So she she had a lot of tools that she had been trying over this whole long period, but did not know how to use them correctly. Um, we did add on some wellness infusions, and then it got interesting because we started ozone autohemotherapy. This is where a lot of people give me that look like, wait a minute, you put ozone in blood? Um, medical ozone creates controlled oxidative signaling. Okay, think exercise, um, temporary stress, then adaptation. Okay, the goal isn't simply boosting immunity, the goal is resilience. We want to support oxygen utilization, circulation, antioxidant pathways, that function of your mitochondria, and immune regulation. For those that are not familiar with ozone autohemotherapy, it can be a little creepy when you hear about it. It involves me putting an IV into the arm. Um, I give some fluid to you, give you a little bit of hydration, but then I drop that little bag below your heart and I let gravity pull blood into the bag. Um, once I get to the desired amount I want, I will then make ozone at your bedside using oxygen in my ozone machine. I will inject that ozone into the bag with your blood. You will see it bubble, um, unless it makes you ill to like watch that. I don't want anybody to go into that fight or flight state. I have had people pass out before. Um, but when you see those ozonides, it is magical. Your blood then turns a very bright, beautiful red, and then I give that blood back to you. Most people are just surprised at how simple the process feels when they're sitting in the chair. We were only doing one session a week when we started. Week two, um, she told me that her brain feels quieter, that she didn't feel as inflamed, and she was waking up before her alarm. I don't give anybody expectations, especially after the first treatment, um, but I'm always hopeful, you know. I never know if someone's going to have a Herzheimer reaction. I do start at a low gamma of the ozone, but we continued for every single week. Once we got to week six, um, Sarah told me that her joint pain had improved, her energy was much better, she was not bloated after she ate. Um, she was sleeping at night, her face wasn't as puffy, and she had not had a migraine, and she was having less frequent headaches. I was so happy, so we continued and we got to week 12. This is where things became very interesting. We checked her blood work again. Her inflammatory markers were greatly improved, her ferritin was improved, her digestion was better, her energy was improved. She did have some hormone symptoms that remained. She was still having some low libido, she was having some mood shifts. Um, she had a little bit of muscle loss when we were looking at her shape scale that she was doing. And then we knew it was time to really optimize her bioidentic hormone replacement. Um, this is when, you know, she was on just low dose progesterone support from the previous provider. Um she wasn't on a targeted testosterone support. So we optimized her dosing, we did some lifestyle support and continued to work on her terrain. Um, hormones weren't the whole story, and they were just another piece. When we got to month six, I'll never forget. She came into the office, she was smiling, um, and she said, I thought I needed someone to fix me. Turns out I needed someone to help me understand my body. Ugh, I'll tell you, I'll never forget those words. She had no joint pain, she was sleeping, her mood was so much better, she had energy, she had weight loss, even though we had not done a weight loss plan. Her body composition was much better. Um, she was having more stable cycles, she had less inflammation, she had improved resilience, and most importantly, she said she felt like herself again. Even in her blood work, she had zero antibodies to her thyroid. So
What Improved By Week 12
SPEAKER_00autoimmune disease isn't just an immune problem. Sometimes it's the stress, sometimes it's the gut dysfunction. Um, speaking of stress, I wonder how her journey would have been if I would have had the float pod like I do now. I think about that all the time. Like some of these people could have really used this float pod before. So I'm so glad I have that as part of the nervous system reset at Harmony Hub Health. Um, I mean, sometimes it is hormones with mineral depletion and the high inflammation toxin burden. Um, I don't ever ask people like what diagnosis do you have when they talk about autoimmune or these dysfunctions because the root cause is generally all the same. You know, what pushed your body into survival mode? Um, diagnosis is often chapter 10, okay? We want chapter one, right? So I just wanted to talk about Sarah's story with you and tell you what Sarah's case really taught me. Okay. After all this time in functional medicine, here's what I know. No two patients that have come to me have ever had the same plan. Um, usually not even close. You know, two women can walk into Harmony Hub Health with complaints of fatigue and autoimmune symptoms, weight gain, brain fog, inflammation, and have completely different root causes. Um, this is why we don't do cookie cutter medicine. You know, this is why everyone doesn't get the same supplement, not everybody gets the same peptide or the same hormones. Everybody gets this autoimmune protocol. Um, everybody starts with terrain optimization. Most of my programs begin with about 12 weeks of terrain work before we jump into hormones or peptides or weight loss or advanced regenerative treatments or aggressive protocols. You know, we have to strengthen the foundation. Um, the terrain really does matter. Uh the first 12 weeks, I love to focus on removing inflammatory triggers, supporting the gut, rebuilding nutrient reserves, improving your sleep. Um, that's such a big thing. Um, addressing stress physiology, supporting your detox pathways, improving blood sugar stability, helping that nervous system feel safe. Um, because sometimes the body isn't broken. It can be very overwhelmed. Patients always get more than just a lab review with me. Um, they receive education, not just instruction. So I don't want patients to depend on me forever. That would be nice, right? I want them to understand their body. Um, we have a functional medicine manual as part of the journey because if I tell somebody that their ferritin is low or they have cortisol dysregulation and they don't understand what that means, then nothing ever changes. Okay. Knowledge creates ownership and ownership creates action. Um patients working on a metabolic plan, you know, they get a 12-week metabolic course. And sometimes that is while they're looking at the functional medicine manual. So patients can meet with me every single month because healing isn't just doing lab work, getting a magic supplement, and then disappearing. Okay, it's let's evaluate, let's adjust, we'll optimize, and we'll repeat. At the end of the 12 weeks, we reassess. Sometimes we continue to optimize. Um, sometimes we uncover deeper layers. Sometimes I move into maintenance. And honestly, that's one of my favorite visits because by then people usually realize, huh, I'm not crazy and I'm not lazy. My body wasn't failing me. Um, and here's the heart
The Hard Truth About Compliance
SPEAKER_00of the truth. The hardest truth about functional medicine. The hardest part is not the labs, okay? It's not the supplements, it's not ozone, it's not even hormones or protocols. It's actually compliance every single time. Um, people seeking functional medicine are often exhausted, not regularly tired, soul tired, I call it, tired of being tired, tired of appointments, tired of medications, tired of researching, tired of disappointing lab results. They're tired of hearing, hmm, try this or do one more thing and add one more supplement. By the time people come to me, they are carrying years of frustration. They've seen their PCP, they've seen their UBGYN, they've seen rheumatology, sometimes they've seen endocrinology. Sometimes they've seen anybody that someone shuffled them to. And I do understand that because I lived it too. Um early in my career, I thought helping meant chasing. I would check in constantly with my patients. I would send reminders, I would follow up repeatedly, I would drag people toward their own goals. I used to want it for them more, I think, than they wanted it for themselves. Maybe it's because I wanted validation of myself, but I felt like I wanted it more. And eventually I realized I was pulling people through a plan that they weren't ready to walk through. And that wasn't helping. Um, that wasn't caring, and I can't carry people into health. No one can. One reason my pricing changed over time wasn't because I suddenly became more expensive. Honestly, I'm still more reasonable than functional medicine providers anywhere near me, but I realized I needed patients who were invested, patients who had skin in the game because commitment matters. Okay. If I knew walking through fire would give me my health back at the end, I would. And honestly, I did. Actually, I did. I I've been through it, and many of my patients have too. Okay. Healing isn't always convenient, it's not quick, it's not even linear. Some days you don't want to think about your meal. Some days you don't want another appointment. Um, some days you don't want to take one more damn supplement. I understand completely. But I also know this you have to want to get better. I don't chase people anymore. If someone misses appointments or if they don't make their follow-up, I don't track them down. Not because I don't care, because I care deeply. But healing requires partnership. I will absolutely walk beside you. I will cheer for you. I will teach you. I will adjust your plan. I will encourage you. I will problem solve for you. I will support you. I will help anyone who is trying, but I cannot do it for you. Okay. The goal was never just improving Sarah's labs. The goal wasn't simply reducing antibodies, even though we did. Um, the goal wasn't weight loss, even though she lost weight, um, or her hormones, even though we balance them. Um, the goal wasn't just to do ozone treatments or give supplements. The goal was to give her her life back because when you feel well again, you become yourself again. And that's worth fighting
